Poulnabrone Dolmen

Next on the list of attractions was the Poulnabrone Dolmen, which is a classic example of a portal tomb dating back probably between 4200 BC to 2900 BC. Excavations were carried out on the site when repairs works needed to be completed, and it was established that 33 individuals were buried in the chamber, including infants, children and adults, both male and female.

It is believed that the bodies would have decomposed elsewhere and then brought to the tomb, sometime around 3000 BC. Personal belongings were also found alongside the bones.
