Marble arch caves

 
For something a bit different, we went along to visit the Marble Arch caves in Enniskillen. Unfortunately as there had been a lot of rain lately, we couldn't go on the boat ride. We were guided around the caves for about 45 minutes and we were informed about how the caves were discovered and other facts about the caves.
 
We found it interesting that before the caves were about to be opened to the public, vandals broke in and ruined some straw stalactites and a massive stalactite that had formed over the past thousands of years. They managed to recover the bottom of the large stalactite and sent it to the Ulster Museum of Belfast where they produced a calcite resin. The resin was then used to stick the tip back to the original stalactite. It will take around 75 years to see if this was successful. Check out the last photo and you can see where they have stuck it back together.
 
All in all not a bad tour for £6 each and it was a nice change of scenery.

  1. You have finally crossed the border.I hope the weather gets better as well.Stay away from those Ulster fry's,otherwise you will have to walk your way around N Ireland to keep your weight down.
