Falkirk Wheel

 
On our way from Wwoofing we stopped in at the Falkirk wheel to see what all the fuss was about.  The wheel is a rotating boat lift that connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The difference in the height of the canals at the wheel is 24 metres. The two canals used to be served by a series of 11 locks but by the 1930's the locks had fallen into disuse.
 
The wheel was opened in 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II, a month later than expected as vandals broke in and forced opened the wheel's gate causing flooding. From the pictures below you can sort of see how it works...
